Multiscale simulation of powder-bed fusion processing of metallic alloys

We present a computational framework for the simulations of powder-bed fusion metallic alloys, which combines: (1) CalPhaD calculations temperature-dependent alloy properties and phase diagrams, (2) macroscale finite element (FE) thermal material addition fusion, (3) microscopic phase-field (PF) solidification in melt pool. The methodology is applied to simulate selective laser melting (SLM) an Inconel 718 using realistic processing parameters. discuss effect importance accounting different between powder bed dense simulations. Using two-dimensional longitudinal slice field calculated via FE simulations, we perform appropriately-converged PF simulation at scale entire pool, resulting calculation with over one billion grid points, yet performed on single cluster node eight graphics units (GPUs). These microscale provide new insight into grain texture selection polycrystalline growth competition under SLM conditions, level detail down individual dendrites.
